Alarm bells began ringing for Maritime Canada’s oyster growers last July when the parasite causing MSX was first discovered in Bedeque Bay, P.E.I. Infected mollusks are harmless for human consumption, but the parasite kills oysters and now threatens to upend a regional industry with an estimated economic value of about $58 million.
